A couple years ago, when training for my black belt, I started coming into the Academy every Sunday and doing a work out on my own. After a few sessions of cranking out forms for two hours straight, I thought, "I need training partners". So I invited all the advanced students to come in and punch at one another for the duration.
After getting my black belt, I thought "Hey. Why not continue keeping the school open on Sundays and see who wants to play?" So I did and open workout was born. Momentum can be a wonderful thing.
Attendance was always small except for around testing. For a few weeks before every test, there would be 8, 10 or even 15 people in the school flinging feet and fists all about. It took me over a year but then I finally realized that the momentum I had prized so dearly had made the open workout time prep for testing. That's not necessarily a bad thing but what if we could get more people in by offering a focus for the workout time.
So last Sunday, we tried the ever popular "grappling" as our focus. It worked! 7 folks came in and rolled around on the floor for two hours. Tune in next month as we try and fabricate other foci to wake people up on Sunday mornings.
