In order to improve, and keep each other safe during partner drills, students of the Art must demonstrate a willingness to play alongside others. We stole the continuum shown above off a poster that hung in a school gym, and use it as a guideline in working with students and helping them to realize their potential. I think it's a brilliant tool...
Ultimately, training in the Martial Arts is an individual pursuit. We have been told by some caretakers that lot of the appeal for their children has to do with the fact that it is neither a team sport, nor a highly competitive venture. I suspect that the same hold true for adults. Put the competitive pressure on me and I wilt like a dandelion bouquet. Wally, on the other hand relishes tabulating his latest Crossfit score, and has no qualms about posting his winning time on the board for all to see!
On the other hand, Martial Arts does function to promote teamwork. With Mo Duk Pai Kung Fu, ours is a teaching style of Martial Arts. We value working with others to share knowledge, and believe that doing so results in better understanding and greater accomplishment. There simply comes a time when it ceases to be all about the individual~one's training and experience frequently becomes richer as a result. Such is the way of life.
